Catching up!
In case you couldn't tell from the cyber silence, I have been away for several weeks. I had no internet access so was unable to check in to either upload pics or see what the new topic for our photo game was each week. As a result I am having to hobble together pictures I took while on vacation and hope they somehow fit the criteria in hindsight. Now that I am back in town and have computer access, I will hopefully get back on the straight and narrow for next weeks subject!
Three weeks ago, vertical lines was the topic. I did actually know the topic before I left so I had delusions of grandeur and spent quite a bit of time trying to catch the motion pattern of balls being dropped and bouncing back up...the lines of motion being the vertical. After many attempts, this is the ONLY one that came remotely close to my intention. It is interesting to me that since it was taken with a white wall as a back drop, the balls look painted on - not intended when I took the pic, but interesting in an artsy kind of way?
Since the ball dropping didn't work out as well as I had hoped, Kelly suggested I take the following pic as a backup. Not as thrilled with it, but it does show vertical lines (and horizontal).
For the Red, White & Blue topic, I pulled a few pics I took of my father and Ryan right before we left. Ryan had changed his clothes to look like my father's twin. It just happened that the theme of their clothing was red, white and blue. My father was pleased as punch to have Ryan dressed in his style, so though the picture isn't a great one, his happiness is what I reacted to. In the photo I took after this one, they have turned their hats around to wear them in "Ryan's style". Funny that Ryan looks more natural to me in that one.
For this week's topic of 'part of the full picture', I did unintentionally take a series that I think fits the subject perfectly. I love that while looking at the picture below you truly wonder what they are all looking at.
The pics below show the source of their curiosity. Ryan was attempting to hang a hammock off the side of the boat and get into/out of it without plunging into the water. A challenge since the bow of the boat has a pretty substantial overhang. We were all vastly entertained by the entire enterprise. Clearly Ryan succeeded in his mission while also conveniently placing the hammock in a spot where no one else is likely to demand a turn (except perhaps me)....

independence
Admittedly, this may not symbolize independence for many, if any, besides myself, if it even is that for me. It was all I could do to not take a photo of a completely dark room, making nothing but a black picture. All week long I have struggled with this assignment, or it has struggled with me as I felt like it would not let me go. Below is the only contribution I can make. It is not well constructed, it is grainy, it is dull. It is independent. Stubbornly so, for it will not tell me why. Why is this "independence," I have no idea, it just is.

vertical lines
I don't know how I managed to do "diagonal" and "horizontal" without realizing that the task was to focus on lines. I was using it as a vague or poetic guide. I did try to do vertical lines this time....
...actually, these still look more generally vertical... Why can't I do lines?

horizontal
I didn't tip the camera or rotate the picture, this plume of lilac florets was laying just like this. Heavy bloom.
Went walking with the intention of taking "horizontal" pics. Must have walked along this wall for half a mile before seeing that I was beside the theme the whole way.
I figured the cloud didn't need explaining, but wonder if this one does. I did mean to have the photo rotated (saved it that way but couldn't load it that way. don't know why). I thought the scar would be the horizontal image, but as it turns out the stretch marks leaving the scar are thin hints of horizontalness.

Diagonal and then some
Good news is I got my camera back, bad news is I got it too late to take any good pics for this weeks topic! The only true 'diagonal' pic that actually came out is directly below and was taken with the now infamous point and shoot. I think it might qualify as diagonal, but is also a pretty boring picture (in my opinion)
I took this picture today on my way to the boat (with my good camera). You might remember from past posts that this was the red boat house at the entrance to Hamburg Cove where we keep our boat. This boat house has always been the "symbol" of the cove and has been shot by many famous photographers over the years. Obviously it fell down some time over the winter and this is all that is left of that landmark. Not sure it classifies as diagonal but I had to share the pic anyway.
The last pic below was also taken with my good camera and definitely is a stretch for diagonal (other than the placement in the frame?!) but I wanted to share anyway. I have a hummingbird feeder hanging off my porch and I am endlessly entertained by their antics. Since I have been reading a book about close-up photography, I was inspired to try to get a good shot of their frolicking. I have now decided I need to invest in extension tubes, but I was pretty happy with the shot below.
